6th Annual Toronto Thin Lizzy Celebration

Here it comes, the 6th Annual Toronto Thin Lizzy Celebration, a celebration of the life and music of Phillip Parris Lynott! Saturday July 21st, 2007 at Jeff Healey's Roadhouse (56 Blue Jays Way Toronto).

So here we are after 5 years... 61 separate performances from 31 different artists... 185 songs played... and ready for round six!

One of the goals of the Toronto Thin Lizzy Celebration is to help highlight the amazing diversity in Lynott's music and in the vast array of musicians his music has inspired. To this end, over the years the Celebration has played host to rock, country, punk, acoustic (guitars and pianos!), reggae, jazz, metal performances and even a seriously kick-ass Greek bouzouki band!

This is something that sets the Toronto show apart from other similar events worldwide, in that it is not a night of tribute bands (not, however, that there's anything at all wrong with that..), but instead, a night of artists paying tribute. Every performer who's ever graced the TLC stage has worked their backsides off to learn the songs they've played (this, in most cases, on top of their already busy schedules). This is an act of love, plain and simple... a love of Phil's music and respect for his memory...

For the first four years, the proceeds from the event went to the Roisin Dubh Trust to help defray the enormous cost of erecting a statue of Phil Lynott in the heart of Dublin. 19 years after his untimely passing, this memorial in bronze was finally unveiled to a crowd of 5000 fans, on August 19th, 2005. (For more on that, please check HERE.)

With the statue in place, subsequent show's proceeds have gone to such worthy causes as the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF) and the TOMA Foundation for Burned Children.

For a peek at what all the controlled chaos has looked like, please check out James Taylor's site for an archive of Toronto Lizzy Celebration pictures past and present.

Tickets will be on sale at Monster Records (664 Yonge St. Toronto - 416-975-1829 - www.monsterrecords.ca) from May 23rd, 2007.

Holy crap! A decade huh?

Ten years ago today, Toronto's Monster Records opened its doors to the public for the first time.Holy crap time flies!

I gotta say folks, it's been a helluva ride, watching this place grow over the years. Jeez, back then we had about 1/5 of the stock we've got now...It fills me with a great deal of satisfaction to think that we have customers who've been shopping here for the *past decade*. Actually it kinda freaks me out a little! (k... maybe more than a little. lol) It was recently brought to my attention that several of you have been shopping here for *more than half your lives*!

Damn I feel old! LOL!

Over the years we've made strong friendships... said goodbye to more friends than I'd care to think about... become a regular stop for many visitors from all points beyond... we've watched the neighborhood undergo various transformations through good times and bad, cold snaps and heatwaves, city strikes, theatre collapses, blackouts, SARS... but damn, through it all, we're still alive and kickin'!

Thanks to *all* of you for helping to make this place as great as it is. I couldn't do it without you guys.

I look forward to seeing what the next ten will bring!

Peace,
Rog

press release--------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1986 the world lost one of its finest songwriters. Here's a little something to keep you from forgetting...

Monster Records and Q107 are proud to present, Toronto's FIFTH ANNUAL,
'THIN LIZZY - a celebration:
the music of Phil Lynott'

Friday July 21st & Saturday July 22nd, 2006 at Healey's (178 Bathurst St.)

For the fifth year in a row, some of the finest musicians on the Canadian indie scene (and some special guests from around the world) are coming together to celebrate and pay tribute to a true warrior poet, Philip Lynott. Since his untimely death in 1986, Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott has left a musical legacy that continues to influence and inspire musicians around the globe. Even the legendary Bob Dylan has been recently quoted singing Lizzy's praises. Over the years, Lynott's songs have been covered by an array of such diverse performers as Henry Rollins, The Corrs, Smashing Pumpkins, Randy Bachman, Huey Lewis, Metallica, The Cure and Canada's own Emm Gryner.
Last year's show was a major success... In all, eleven bands performed to a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Performers and fans alike had a fantastic time and this year stands to be even better!
Each year, the show has gotten progressively bigger and this year it is set to be two solid nights (Friday July 21st and Saturday July 22nd at Healey's) of great performances and great songs. It'll be the largest show we've done to date! Once again have artists from various musical backgrounds coming together to honour the memory and music of Phil Lynott. In the past, we've had country, rock, metal, punk, reggae and acoustic acts perform. There are no tribute bands, only artists paying tribute. In addition to all of the amazing home-grown talent we've got lined up (
Tacoma Redd, Crazy Babies, Ash Lee Blade, The McBrides (feat. Des Leahy, of 'Classic Album' band fame), Crunchberry, Gorgeous George, Last Chance Band and more...), we have Jimmy Coup (Andrew W.K.) flying over from Los Angeles, the fantastic Animal Grace is heading over from Ohio and once again we are thrilled to announce Sean O'Connor of 80's Irish cult band The Lookalikes, is winging his way across the pond to help us pay tribute to his friend Phil Lynott.
This is going to be one hell of a gig.
The show starts at 9pm sharp and once again, we'll be taking orders for personalized, autographed copies of Philomena Lynott's book, "My Boy". (which is currently in pre-production as a major motion picture starring Gary Dourdan (C.S.I.) as Phillip and Holly Hunter as Phil's mother, Philomena). Philomena has also graciously offered to take time out of her busy schedule to pre-record an introduction for the event.
In the past, all proceeds from the shows have gone to the Roisin Dubh (ROW-SHEEN DUV) Trust for the creation of a Phil Lynott memorial in his hometown of Dublin. This past summer, the statue was finally unveiled to much fanfare, ( see this LINK ) in the heart of Dublin City-Centre.
Out of respect and much love for our dear friends in Tacoma Redd, half of all monies raised this year will be donated to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the name of their guitarist and friend Ron 'Dabz' Boudreau-McLellan. Ron's passing two years ago due to complications arising from CF, left a sad void in the Toronto Punk community and in the lives of all he touched. For more about Ron, please check this LINK...
The remainder of this year's Toronto Thin Lizzy Celebration proceeds will be donated to the TOMA Foundation for Burned Children. For some time now, TOMA has had a strong voice of support in Q107 on-air personality John Derringer. We ourselves are quite fortunate to have been the recipients of John's kind, on-air endorsement over the years and it is a great pleasure to assist this worthwhile cause that is near and dear to his heart.
Tickets are only $12 in advance ($20 for both nights!) and $15 at the door.
Advance tickets are available at Healey's and Monster Records (416) 975-1829 (664 Yonge St. Toronto, 11am-8pm Mon-Thurs, 11am-11pm Fri-Sat, 11am to 6pm Sun.)
For any questions, please contact Roger Costa (416) 975-1829 or e-mail to mailto:thinlizzycelebration@hotmail.com(and check www.monsterrecords.ca for up to date information. For an overview of last year's show, please click on the 'Features' tab.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So there you have it!
Take care Folks! We'll see ya all soon!
Peace,
Rog
